California's Victor Aguilar Shines in Prestigious Harvard Leadership Fellowship Program

Updated: Jun 28

San Leandro California's Victor Aguilar has successfully participated in and completed the esteemed David Bohnett Leaders Fellowship, a prestigious program facilitated by Victory Institute in collaboration with the David Bohnett Foundation. This fellowship included a three-week intensive leadership development course at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, designed to propel LGBTQ+ leaders into the next stage of their public service careers. Notable alumni of this fellowship include California Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins, Colorado State Senator Dominick Moreno, and Wisconsin State House Democratic Leader Greta Neubauer.

Annise Parker, President & CEO of the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute, remarked on the selection of this year's fellows: "We chose these seven Bohnett Leaders Fellows because of their deep commitment to community leadership and public service. Each of the communities these fellows represent will benefit from their time at Harvard Kennedy School, where they’ll learn about skills and policies they can implement back home. We are especially proud that red states are well-represented in this year’s cohort, as we continue to build the leadership pipeline in states where our community is most targeted. I congratulate each of our 2024 fellows and I look forward to seeing how they’ll grow through this program."

Councilmember Victor Aguilar, elected to the San Leandro City Council in 2018 representing District 3, has a rich background in both education and community service. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Hawaii Pacific University and an Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies from Pasadena City College. In 2019, he also earned a certificate from the University of Southern California Executive Education Forum for Policy through the Local Leaders Program.

Aguilar moved to San Leandro in 2011 from Los Angeles with his husband, Dr. Nolan Quinabo, PT, DPT, and their three bulldogs. He has served on the San Leandro Human Services Commission from 2014 to 2018, acting as Commission Chair from 2016 to 2018. Additionally, he is an account Executive for a Construction Testing Company and has held various roles in community service and non-profit organizations, including the Floresta Neighborhood Association and Lavender Seniors of the East Bay.

His extensive professional and political experience includes serving as a former Field Deputy for Hon. Richard Alatorre in Los Angeles City Council District 14, and holding positions within the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee and several national affiliations such as the National League of Cities (NLC) and the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club.

Victor's dedication to public service and leadership has been recognized with awards such as the City of San Leandro's 5 Year Service Award in 2020. His involvement in intergovernmental agencies includes serving on the Board of Trustees for the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District and participating in the General Assembly of the Association of Bay Area Governments.

Through the David Bohnett Leaders Fellowship, Aguilar has further honed his leadership skills and policy knowledge, positioning him to continue making impactful contributions to his community and beyond.
